Presentation

Pepto-Care Suspension: Pink color and strawberry flavored 200ml liquid suspension; each ml suspension contains Bismuth

Subsalicylate BP 17.5 mg.

Description: The demulcent base provides a protective coating of the lower oesophagus and a partial coating in the stomach which

holds the Bismuth Subsalicylate in suspension. Bismuth subsalicylate may exert its antidiarrheal action not only by stimulating

absorption of fluid and electrolytes across the intestinal wall but also when hydrolysed to salicylic acid, by inhibiting

synthesis of a prostaglandin responsible for intestinal inflammation and hypermotility. In addition, Bismuth Subsalicylates binds

toxins produced by E. coli.

Indication: For upset stomach, indigestion, heartburn and nausea, Controls diarrhea.

Dosage and administration

Shake well before use.

Adults and children 12 years and over: 1 dose (30 ml or 6 x 5ml spoonful’s) every ½ to 1 hour as needed. Do not exceed 8 dose (240

ml) in 24 hours. Use until diarrhea stops, but not more than 2 days. Drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration

caused by diarrhea.

Not for children under 12 years of age.

Contra-Indications, warnings etc.: Contra-indications: Bismuth Subsalicylate should not be used by patient’s hypersensitivity to

Aspirin or taking other salicylates. An ulcer, a bleeding problem, bloody or black stool. Bismuth Subsalicylate should not be used

by patients hypersensitive to any ingredient in the formulation.

Drug interaction: Bismuth Subsalicylate Contains salicylates therefore care should be exercised if receiving drugs to thin the

blood (anticoagulant therapy) or oral therapy for diabetes or treatment for gout or arthritis.

Warning and precautions: Bismuth Subsalicylate should not be used if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 days, ringing in the

ears or loss of hearing occurs, diarrhea lasts more than 2 days. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chicken

pox or flu-like symptoms should not use this product, if changes in behavior with nausea or vomiting occur, consult a doctor

because these symptoms could be an early sign of Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious illness.

Pregnancy & Lactation: Bismuth Subsalicylate should not be used during pregnancy and lactation unless clearly necessary.

Overdose: In cases of overdose, get medical help or consult with a registered physician’s.

Pharmaceutical Precaution: store in a cool and dry place, protected from light.
